The Professional Standards Authority is pleased to continue its participation in the annual Summer Clerkship Program facilitated by the Law Society of New South Wales.
We are offering two clerkships for 2021. If you are a law student in your penultimate year, spend part of your summer break working with us.
These positions provide a unique opportunity to be involved in government regulatory practice by helping to improve professional standards and increase consumer protection.
You will have hands-on involvement in legal work and a range of projects. Some of the tasks you may be involved in are:
- Legal research projects
- Briefs
- Case reviews and summaries
- Legislative interpretation.
A summer clerkship with the Authority is suited to students who enjoy working in a fast paced and dynamic workplace, have excelled in a variety of academic and non-academic fields, and are interested in pursuing a career in government regulation or public policy.

Your Application
You must comply with the Law Society’s eligibility and how to apply guidelines.

Please note that in line with the Law Society’s eligibility requirements, it is expected that applicants will be in the penultimate year of their law degree.
You are encouraged to complete the application form prepared by the Law Society. Your application should:
- include a covering letter addressing all the selection criteria
- include a CV and an academic transcript, and
- contact details for at least two referees.
The selection criteria used to assess applications is:
- Interest in, and an understanding of, the work of the Authority
- Experience, gained through paid or voluntary work and extracurricular activities, that would enable you to contribute to the work of the Authority
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong academic record
- Strong analytical skills.
In your application, please explain how you meet each criterion, providing examples where possible. This must be no longer than 5 pages, including your CV. Your academic transcript is not counted toward this total.
The Interview
Positions will be recruited based on merit selection. To ensure that this process is equitable, interviews are formal, with each interviewee being asked the same set of questions. Interviewees may also be asked to prepare a written response to a hypothetical problem.
