The process of becoming a profession, that is professionalisation, is the process by which an occupation becomes defined as a profession.

Professionalisation is characterised as ‘a profession arises when any trade or occupation transforms itself through the development of formal qualification based upon education, apprenticeship, and examinations, the emergence of regulatory bodies with powers to admit and discipline members, and some degree of monopoly rights’.

This article examines the origins and characteristics of professions, the development and definition of professions, the new professions, the benefits of professions, and professions and corporations.
